‘Preemies’ are more than just small- they are developmentally unprepared for life outside the uterus. They have more problems with- hearing, vision, and speech. As the gestational age of the infant decreases, the risk increases.

Every week that an infant matures in utero buys your baby valuable time to grow and mature. Examples- an infant born at 24 weeks [6 months] weighs about 1 pound, their eyelids are fused and their lungs are very immature and need the help of a ventilator to assist in their breathing. Their chances of survival are about 1 in 10. An infant born at 36 weeks gestation weighs about 5 1/2 pounds, it’s vision and digestion are well developed. Their respiratory need are questionable?. Their chances of survival are 9 out 10.
Of major concern with premature infant’s is RDS- respiratory distress syndrome. Infants born before 32 weeks gestation-[8 months] are at an 11 % risk for developing RDS. Infant’s born before 37 weeks are at about a 4% risk. Their is a 1% risk for infant’s born after 37 weeks.

RDS- occurs when the infant’s lungs are immature and are collapsed due to a lack of a substance called surfactant. As an infant matures in utero the surfactant becomes available. If the infant’s lungs are suffering from RDS they will need assisted ventilation to exchange air with each breath. Approximately 14% of infants born before 32 weeks- need to be placed on ventilators. Compared to less then 1% of infants born after 37 weeks gestation.

Very special attention is needed to be given to these tiny babies. They include placement on a ventilator, enclosure in a heated closed incubator, special intravenous solutions for nutrition, muffling extraneous sound and light as well as special care for their very fragile skin care needs. Many great advances have been made in the survival rates of these very special infants but there is no substitution for a full term baby.

Prematurity in the United States has increased by about 20% since 1980. What causes to happen? We will be exploring many of these issues in the coming months. Hopefully this sharing of information will help you to decrease your risk of a premature birth.

Hummer Winblad partner Dan Beldy also says he is on the lookout for European partners who can help him find qualified staff for Hummer Winblad-backed companies.

Given the importance of relationships in the Old Country, some U.S. venture firms are staffing their own offices with European nationals to help forge alliances and understand marketplace idiosyncrasies. Geocapital has dabbled in European investments since 1991, dispatching U.S. partners on trips across the Atlantic. But with $150 million now tagged for European investing, including $75 million from the Geocapital Eurofund and $75 million from Geocapital’s latest U.S.-based fund, Geocapital V, the firm’s roster includes a mix of seven American, continental European, and British partners, according to London-based partner Nic Humphries, who is British.

“People underestimate how different the countries are in culture and infrastructure,” says GE eFund director Laurel Bowden, who recently turned down a U.K.-based online financial services company because its plans for pan-European expansion were unconvincing.

“The French do business differently from the Germans who do business differently from the British and so on,” agrees accesspaper’s Palm. “Europe has sovereign national states, and people are keeping their cultures as unique as they can.”

A few days in Europe bears out his thoughts. Certainly, a U.S. venture capitalist looking for partner firms could well find French ways perplexing. One French angel investor, Yannig Gourmelon, had no sooner finished presenting to a group of financiers at a (see p178) recent London seminar sponsored by French financial relations firm nshow.com when he deflected a follow-up question by explaining, “The French don’t like to talk about money.”

Women  group received a 1-year membership that was paid for by the investigators. These women were given individualized meal plans that prescribed 1200–1400 calories per day. Women in the weight loss-manual group were given a copy of The LEARN Program for Weight Management—2000, a step-by-step weight management manual that includes 16 weekly lessons focusing on Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, Relationships, and Nutrition. The LEARN manual suggests that women eat 1200–1500 calories per day of self-selected foods while following the guidelines of the Food Guide Pyramid. LEARN Program participants are encouraged to keep daily physical activity and food records, including calories consumed, for the first 16 weeks. The LEARN manual encourages program participants to engage in regular physical activity by promoting lifestyle activity and enjoyable programmed activities. LEARN encourages individuals to use social support to help achieve weight loss goals. Finally, and perhaps most uniquely, The LEARN Program focuses on permanent lifestyle/behavioral changes that promote permanent weight loss. Examples of LEARN’s behavior/lifestyle change strategies include setting reasonable and achievable goals, countering negative self-talk, avoiding attitude traps, developing coping skills, learning relapse prevention strategies, distinguishing hunger from cravings, and many more.

Low self-esteem, unrealistic expectations and self-loathing are all products of the ideal beauty image projected in America. These images have damaged women to the point where they willingly subject themselves to painful treatments, plastic surgery and expensive skincare products and cosmetics.

The skincare and cosmetic product aspect of the beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar a year business providing to women “hope in a jar” or tube. Out of the many large upscale cosmetic companies like Lancome, Este Lauder and Clinique only four cater to African-American women and even less addresses the needs of other women of color. I wonder, in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society like ours, how this is possible. I find the biggest offenders to be department stores.

Even though most carry products, foundation particularly, in colors that are appropriate for women of color they only use European models in their commercials and print ads. As a beauty advisor for a major cosmetic company I find many women of color patronizing lines that don’t even find it necessary to include women of color in their counter displays promoting a new product or new colors for the season. These companies gladly take our money but refuse to use women of color in their ad campaigns to let us know that their products are for women of color too and that our patronage is appreciated.

Is it ignorance or blatant bigotry? I think it’s a little of both. According to Business Trends Analysts statistics show white baby boomers, the main purchasing demographic for most cosmetic companies are approaching the end of their cosmetic buying years. While African- American women, who are younger than average are still in their cosmetic purchasing prime.

Some of the largest cosmetic lines will indeed feel the pressure as the ethnic makeup of the United States changes. By the year 2020 32% of the US population will be people of color. The fastest growing ethnic groups according to Business Trends Analysts are Asian-Americans, Hispanic Americans and American Indians with Caucasians growing the least. By the year 2050 the US population will have a “minority majority”. States like California, Florida and New York have already experienced the switch.

In the not so distant future mainstream cosmetic companies will have to change their paradigm and create and market products that will meet the varied needs of women of color or else they won’t survive.

I must admit cosmetic companies mostly sold in drug and discount stores like Revlon, Maybelline and Covergirl have risen to the occasion and have incorporated products for women of color and also feature them as spokeswomen. But will higher priced and more prestigious companies occupying the aisles of department stores follow suit? We have yet to see.

Metronidazole, or Flagyl, must be taken either orally or intravaginally for a week. For oral administration, the dosage is 500 mg in tablet form, two times daily. This method carries a greater rate of side effects than the intravaginal method. Another possibility is to apply it within the vagina one time a day. To lower the effects to the fetus, smaller doses of metronidazole are given to pregnant women. Systemic metronidazole treatment may have these negative side effects: nausea, diarrhea, and in some cases, a metallic taste. During the treatment, and for one full day after, no alcohol should be consumed by patients.

Clindamycin (Cleocin)

Clindamycin cream is used for seven days at bedtime and applied intravaginally. Different methods of treatment are oral administration for a week’s time or vaginal ovules for a 3 day period. Clindamycin applied topically is not recommended during the latter half of pregnancy. With oil-based substances like clindamycin lotion, latex condoms or diaphragms could lose strength for 5 days following usage.

You will not have to go to the doctor again if the symptoms resolve. In cases of infections that recur, the manner of treatment will differ from the method used originally.

Although the occurrence of bacterial vaginosis is associated with sex acts, infection does not always occur in this manner. Male partners are advised to get treatment in cases of infections that recur or persist, and this happens frequently.
