Count down

A 1992 Danish study reported that the average sperm count worldwide had dropped from 113 million per milliliter of semen in 1940 to 66 million per milliliter in 1990. Some researchers have proposed that environmental and occupational exposure to certain chemicals that act as hormone disrupters may be the cause of the decline. The theories have sparked controversy.

Critics point out that the studies have examined selected groups of men and not the general population, and that age, abstinence before ejaculation, ejaculatory frequency, and the number of sperm samples analyzed per participant weren’t controlled.
