Deciding on Treatment

It is very important to see your doctor right away, once a genital ulcer or sore begins to develop. There are several reasons for being expedient. First, the earlier the physician has access to the sores, the more likely the test will be accurate when an ulcer is truly due to herpes.
This is because virus replication occurs most rapidly in the first 48 hours of infection. As the infection progresses, the infected individual’s immune system gradually takes over and decreases the amount of virus particles available to produce a diagnostic test result.
Medication will have very little benefit if given late in the course of an outbreak. Third, in a minority of cases, there are other causes of genital ulcers and sores, which can be cured and/or effectively treated but only if an accurate diagnosis is made.
