Treating noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland with the drug Proscar (generic propecia) reduces episodes of urinary retention and the need for surgery by more than 50 percent, a recent long-term study has found. The results contradict an earlier 1-year study that concluded Proscar worked no better than a placebo.

Proscar is prescribed to men with abnormally enlarged prostates, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is common in men over age 50. It can cause frequent urination, sudden urges to urinate and an inability to empty the bladder.

A 4-year study published in a February 1998 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found that Proscar reduced symptoms and the need for surgery in 53 percent of study participants with abnormally enlarged prostates. Researchers believe the reason this study contradicted an earlier one is that Proscar is effective only in treating men with significantly enlarged prostates. The earlier study included men with only slightly enlarged prostates.

A surgical procedure is the most common treatment. Proscar costs about $700 a year and takes about 4 to 6 months to work. Side effects, which are infrequent, can include decreased sexual interest and erection problems.

If you suffer from a chronic illness and need to take several rx remedies, the price can be a serious burden. Internet pharmacies no prescription may offer your loved one an effortless method to buy medication online at a more inexpensive cost.

Today’s world is rapidly changing, so are our lifestyles and expectations of aging. Isn’t it just awesome to be alive in such a time as this, with its many beginnings and endings?

Life is truly an exciting adventure. But, sometimes in this open field of opportunities our choices are of such magnitude that it can seem overwhelming. Life is always moving forward, but our attitude can leave us yearning for the past, rather than being an active part of the progress of our times.

Just as the world continues to evolve so do we, especially when we consciously choose to do so. Looking ahead and choosing our direction is imperative for traveling across the country, and even more necessary for our inner journey — our trip across time.

Did you know that today:

Almost 35 million Americans are age 65 or older?
That three out of five “seniors” are women?
That the average life expectancy at birth has increased to 79.4 years for women and 73.9 years for men and is expected to continue to increase?
Many of us are beginning to recognize there must be some change in our lifestyles if we are to be healthy throughout our life time. Changes in caring for our bodies, expanding our mental horizons and engaging in social and spiritual activities that stimulate and enrich our human experience.

At the National Council on the Aging (www.ncoa.org/news) conference, Myths and Realities of Aging, the results of a comprehensive survey of more than 3,000 adult men and women in the United States were revealed. In spite of the public predominance of information which might lead us to believe that elders are unhappy and plagued with problems, this survey revealed that most Americans would be happy to live to be 90 and most of the respondents considered their elder years to be the best years of their lives.

In mid-life we stand at a fork in the road. We can either slide down the attitude-path that old age infirmities are inevitable, or choose to consciously age, making every moment an adventure filled with new discoveries.

If aging is a natural part of the purpose of life, and it is, then it is up to us to use every experience, whether we call it good or bad, to gain the wisdom and compassion necessary to blaze new trails in the increased longevity of humankind.

Here are three ways to enhance your body, mind and spirit in mapping your journey across time.

Diet comes from a Greek word that means “way of life.” So why does the word “diet” have such a negative connotation? Well, most people assume “diet” implies starvation and deprivation. Not true. Any eating plan that makes you feel hungry and deprived forces your metabolism to slow down and you actually end up reserving fat stores. If you’re going to go on a diet, think of it as a new beginning, a new way of life, and an opportunity to learn how to use food to your advantage!

And if you remove the “T” you get die, so stick with your diet
But seriously it’s true about the deprivation factor. My doctor told me that following an extremely low calorie diet an extended period of time will make your body enter a starvation mode. Your metabolism will slow down to accommodate your lowered calorie intake, and your body will try to store fat rather than burn it off.

When visiting our child’s school and classroom regularly, we accomplish three things. One, we communicate to the teachers our interest in our child’s education. Two, we become aware of the environment in which our child is growing up. We learn the culture of the school and the type of experiences to which the child is exposed. Three, with our actions, we communicate to our child that education is very important to us, so important that we are willing to ask for time off from work to visit his or her school. Remember that we cannot be partners in any project if we do not make the effort to know our partners. An education for our children is one of our most important projects.

Last, but not least, is the community. Whatever happens in the community in which we live affects the way children see their education. The community can be a positive or negative factor for our children, just as much as what takes place in the school and in the home. If the child is exposed to healthy activities that promote education, such as libraries, museums, sports clubs, baseball leagues, etc., it is more probable that he will find superior role models in these places. On the contrary, the same community can convert itself into enemy number-one to the future of our children if they are exposed to gangs, drugs, violence and other negative factors that may influence their lives forever.

We the parents are the ones who must make sure these three elements — school, family and community — work together to prepare our children to be mature adults. To participate more in the school, a parent should do the following. Know the child’s teacher. Know the school principal, and visit the child’s classes regularly. Frequently ask the teacher about the child’s achievement in class, and attend the parent conferences that most schools have twice a year. Look for extra ways to help the child when needed.

So that your home favors the education of your child, it is important to do the following. Establish a quiet study place. Be consistent about the study time, choose a specific study hour (after school or after dinner), turn off the television and keep the study hour even if the child has no homework. The child can still profit by taking time to read, do math, or another activity that will develop abilities. Have the materials available for your child to complete homework (scissors, pens and pencils, ruler, dictionary, etc.) They often waste a lot of precious time looking for these things.

Be a model for your children. Allow them to see you reading frequently. Remember, the schools cannot do it alone. Our children’s futures are far too important to risk.

We can keep our kids safe and continue to monitor what goes on in the school and in the community. Together we can eliminate the fears that seem to be permeating communities throughout the USA. We can also listen more often to what our kids have to say in order to keep the lines of communication open.

Once again we are bombarded with the horrifying news of yet another school shooting. As parents we fear our power is somehow lost. We are fearful and terrified by the thought of our children’s schools turning into shooting galleries and of our children losing their safety.

Parents wonder what they can do and how they can support the efforts to keep kids safe and in school. Your child’s future success in school depends on how well you and other parents work together with teachers as partners in the educational process. The participation of parents in the school is very important to the future of all our children. Some of the questions we often reflect on are as follows: Out of 100 children, how many actually finish high school? What is the reason that some students are successful and some are not? Can schools alone do the work of educating our children?

The success of a child in school requires the participation of three elements. The first is the home. From his or her family, the child learns the basics of self-esteem. The child who receives positive reactions from his or her parents learns to appreciate good personal qualities. Parents and family members will then become a model and guide that will help to foster self-confidence. The family is very important in determining the success the child will have in school because it is at home the child learns work habits. It is also the family environment in which the child lives the formative years of his or her life. If the father and mother support education, the child learns to see school as something positive.

Secondly is the school. From the first day that a child steps into a classroom, he or she begins to form an idea and a perception about school and education. The child’s teachers, especially in primary grades, have a strong influence on the way a child perceives himself or herself. Teachers also spend more time with your children than you do during the day.

Hopefully they will be the kind of person who is motivating and encouraging toward your child and builds your child’s self-esteem.

We must take into consideration that students spend almost six consecutive hours at school. It its important that the teacher-child relationship is a positive and affirmative one.

Get to know your child’s teacher, the staff and others who work there. When a child returns from school unmotivated, crying or without desire of returning the next day, we as parents should listen and attempt to find out what is making the child unhappy.

Visiting our child’s school and meeting with teachers frequently helps the child to get the education and treatment he or she deserves.

Good news for veggie lovers, new findings show that vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and bok choy may help to protect against lung cancer, according to a report published in the August 26th issue of Lancet journal. Researchers found that broccoli and other vegetables in the cruciferous vegetable group protect against lung cancer because they contain chemicals known as isothiocyanates. In previous studies, isothiocyanates were shown to neutralize the chemicals that cause cancer in tobacco, and act as antioxidants to protect cells from damage.

In the 11-year study, researchers examined the incidence of lung cancer in 18,000 men, who were either on diets with vegetables that contained isothiocyanates or diets without it. Researchers found that men who did not eat vegetables with isothiocyanates were 36 percent more likely to develop lung cancer than men who consumed vegetables with isothiocyanates, even after smoking was taken into account.

If you do grow your own stevia, here are a few hints on picking and drying your plants. The best time of day to pick is after the dew has evaporated, but before the sun is hot enough to dry all the volatile oils and therapeutic properties from the plants. Don’t pick the herbs when they’re wet if you’re planning to dry them. They may become moldy.

An important thing to remember when drying herbs is to process them as quickly as possible after picking to ensure maximum flavor. Once gathered, shake gently to remove dust and insects. It’s important to keep the herbs out of the sun to prevent the color and flavor from fading.

To dry herbs quickly, spread on a mesh rack and place in a slow oven set from 100 to 125 degrees. Using more heat causes the volatile oils in the plants to be destroyed. Leave the oven door open, and stand nearby, the leaves will dry quickly. To air dry the herbs, make sure they are not left in places that could be attacked by insects or rodents. Vermin are especially common in hot, humid climates. In colder climates, mildew is a factor to consider.

The drying area should be dry, well ventilated and out of direct light. In damp or cold climates, some artificial heat may be necessary to supplement the natural drying process. If you’re hanging the herbs in bunches to dry, don’t make your bunches too large, or the leaves could turn black or mold. You can hang air-drying herbs inside paper bags to keep the dust off, just be sure to punch many holes into the bags to let the air in and keep moisture out.

Some herbs dry very well when spread on trays, but don’t spread them too thickly. In a warm, dry spot, stevia will air dry in anywhere from 4 to 7 days, depending, of course, on climate. Leaves gathered when the moon is waning tend to dry most rapidly since they retain less sap in their leaves and stems.

If you don’t have a garden plot (stevia doesn’t do very well in containers), you may obtain both powdered and liquid stevia at most health food markets. While the powdered and liquid extracts do not retain the medicinal properties of the whole herb, they are an asset to anyone wanting to reduce sugar consumption. To equal one cup of sugar in cooking, use 1/3 teaspoon powdered extract, ¾ teaspoon liquid extract, or one tablespoon powdered leaf.

Use stevia sparingly, adding too much overwhelms the taste buds. Combining the stevia with 1 to 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup improves the flavor. Things made with stevia won’t taste like those made with sugar but will have a pleasant-tasting quality all its own.

To make your own liquid stevia extract, bring 2 cups of purified water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and add ¼ cup of crushed or powdered dried stevia leaves. Cover and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and steep in a covered pot until cool. Strain through cheesecloth and refrigerate in a covered container. The concentrate is a dark, greenish black color. Five drops of this equals 2 tablespoons sugar, 20 drops equals ½ cup sugar and ¾ teaspoon equals 1 cup sugar. For a cold extraction, soak ¼ cup of the powdered leaf in 2 cups of water for 8 to12 hours. Strain through the cheesecloth.

STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE
3 cups pineapple juice, 2 cups strawberries, 1 banana, ¼ tsp stevia extract. Process in blender until smoothe.

ALMOND MILKSHAKE
1 ½ cups almond milk, 2 frozen bananas, 6-8 strawberries, 1/8 tsp. stevia extract.

SWEET POTATO RICE PUDDING
½ cup packed, cooked sweet potato
1 2/3 cup of milk
½ tsp. stevia extract
2 cups short grain brown rice (cooked)
1 tsp vanilla extract
¼ tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt

Blend the cooked sweet potato and milk in blender with stevia. Place the cooked rice in a medium sized, heavy bottom saucepan. Pour the blended potato and milk into the pan.

Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes or until thick. Add vanilla, spices and salt. Cook a few minutes longer. Serves 4.

There is a huge interest in weight loss and reducing sugar intake for greater health! Here’s some herbal insight … it’s called stevia. For all of you out there who have a sweet tooth but don’t like to see the calories sugar brings, stevia is a wonderful alternative.

People who have had adverse reactions from using artificial sweeteners will especially like stevia because it is a natural product with no known side effects. Now fairly easy to find in health food markets or at garden centers, stevia plants are easy to grow in your garden.

Stevia rebaudiana, the sweetest natural product known to man, is a member of the Aster family (Compositae). A small perennial shrub native to South America, the Guarani Indians of Paraguay have used it to sweeten bitter drinks since pre-Columbian times, but it wasn’t until 1887 that scientists officially discovered it. More than 80 species of stevia grow wild in North America and 200 more in South America, but only Stevia rebaudiana and one other species have the intense natural sweetness.

In 1931, French researchers discovered the source of the sweetness: a glycoside they named stevioside composed of glucose, sophorose and steviol which is 200-300 times as sweet as sugar with virtually no calories.

In 1941, because of the shortage of sugar in England, British scientists commissioned research for stevia as a potential sweetener for beer and other beverages as well as a food for diabetics. Though the test plots yielded the equivalent of two tons of sugar per acre, the project was set aside and forgotten. The Japanese began to grow stevia in greenhouses in 1954, and after some artificial sweeteners were banned due to health concerns in the late 1960′s, the use of stevia increased.

Most commercial culture of stevia is done in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, where stevia holds 41% of the sweetener market, used in pickles, fish and dried seafoods, meat pastes, soy sauce, bean paste products, fruit-flavored drinks, ice cream and chewing gum.

First imported to the U.S. in the late 1970′s, less than ten years later, stevia was used primarily in the manufacture of sweetened herbal teas. Though stevia was not proven toxic in tests done on laboratory animals, and no carcinogenic risk to humans was indicated, the FDA placed an embargo against stevia in 1991. The embargo remained in place until 1995 when the FDA agreed to recognize stevia as a dietary supplement rather than as a food additive for use as a sugar substitute.

Long-term chronic toxicity analyses of stevia conducted in Japan have shown it to be safe as a food additive, but today, stevia may still be imported only if explicitly labeled as a dietary supplement, an ingredient of a dietary supplement or for research purposes.

In addition to being a sweetener, stevia is considered a medicinal herb. As a tonic, it stimulates mental alertness and counters fatigue, aids in digestion, regulates the metabolism, has a therapeutic effect on the liver, pancreas and spleen and may help regulate blood sugar levels. Its uses in preventing tooth decay, obesity and diabetes are also documented. James Duke, in Green Pharmacy, recommends using stevia for sweetening anti-candida teas.

The sweetness of the leaves depends on growing conditions such as soil and the number of hours of light per day the plant receives. Stevia plants grow anywhere from 24 to 36 inches tall. The root system consists of fine roots that spread near the surface and thicker, deeper roots. Wild stevia grows in acidic, sandy areas near marshes and grasslands with shallow water tables, but it is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions.

It likes average temperatures of about 75 degrees with a range of 25 to 110 degrees (zone 9). It reproduces by seed, crown division or rooting. Seeds should be sown indoors, then the seedlings transplanted outdoors as early in the spring as possible for maximum growth and yield.

Seed germination is unpredictable, so most commercial stevia is grown from cuttings which blossom in the late summer and early fall.

Stevia is harvested as it begins to flower, as this is when the leaf weight is the greatest and stevioside content is at its peak. Grown in full sun and space, plant the plants close together so they can support one another. Canadian researchers found that plants spaced 12 inches in rows 12 inches apart yielded 2,677 pounds per acre of leaves with a 10.5% stevioside content, equal to nearly 30 tons of sugar.

What is a good age to start learning golf? And, can you make any suggestions for a father who plays golf and who would like to get his kids started on the path of Tiger Woods?

Age? The earlier the better, but the beauty of golf is that it can be taken up at any age. Rule of thumb… if your children can differentiate a golf ball from a flowerbed, they’re ready to go.

In all our years of teaching junior golfers, the kids who have the most fun and who tend to play the best are the ones who want to be there. It’s great to introduce them to the game but let them decide if they enjoy it. In other words, refrain from incantations.

Teach your child to respect the game of golf. It is a game of honor, integrity, strategy and creativity, “a gentleman’s game.”

Teach your child the rules and etiquette of golf. This will make everyone’s golfing experience more pleasurable.

Finally, and most importantly, get them started with a local PGA Professional. That way they can learn the most important tools of the game… THE FUNDAMENTALS. Your child’s understanding of the fundamentals of golf will last a lifetime making their golfing experience less frustrating, more fun, and much more successful.

The thyroid supplements used to treat hypothyroidism contain natural hormones normally made by the thyroid gland. As long as they are prescribed at the proper dose, there should be no side effects. However, if excessive amounts are given, then an individual can have mild symptoms of hyperthyroidism including jitteriness, racing heart and headaches.

When beginning treatment for patients who have been hypothyroid for several months or years, most doctors will suggest starting with a relatively low dose of the T4 supplement (0.025 or 0.05 milligrams each day). The dose is then increased every three to six weeks until a full replacement dose is attained. Usually this is in the range of 0.075 to 0.15 milligrams daily. This strategy allows the individual time to adapt back to a normal metabolic rate. However, after radioactive iodine treatment or surgery, T4 supplements can be started when needed at near the full replacement level since the individual has not been hypothyroid for very long.

Individuals should try to take the T4 supplement as prescribed. However, T4 stays in the blood and tissues for several days before it is broken down. This means there is little change in the blood levels of the hormone if you miss a single dose. Therefore, if you do forget a pill, it is safe to take an extra pill the next day. T4 supplements are best taken on an empty stomach, such as before a meal. Iron supplements, some antacids and a medication called sucralfate are known to interfere with the absorption of T4 in the intestines. Therefore, one should avoid taking thyroid supplements with these agents.

Rapid ejaculation can make you feel myriad of sensations. Obtain safe premature ejaculation treatment created to stay much longer during sex, and increase your duration, energy.
