Women rarely feel the crushing chest pain that most people consider a telltale sign of heart disease. In fact, most women who suffer a heart attack describe the experience as more like a bad case of indigestion or heartburn.

Other, less familiar symptoms of heart disease in women include:

Chronic breathlessness or waking up at night having difficulty breathing extreme fatigue, especially after activity dizziness, or lightheadedness, after activity.

swelling, particularly of the ankles or lower legs
unexplained stomach upset or nausea
